PROMOTING ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION AND VOCABULARY KNOWLEDGE BY USING PHONETIC DRILLS
Phonic is a method of teaching to read the words and sentences associated with various sound using the correct speeches. There are various ways to teach and promote English pronunciation and enhance the students vocabulary knowledge, using the phonetic drills can be fun and motivating especially among young children. Teachers have variety of learning methodology to teach and these have been very successful techniques that most teachers in English can highly adapt.
A new word of discovery – Children love to discover new things in particular that is why this is a good time to give them a new phonetic words example p as in peas or q as quick and t is in tea. Their teacher will divide the students in two group then the teacher will say the meaning of the word, the student who written first the correct word gets a point but they must also guess the correct word and be able to pronounce it correctly or say its meaning to get the point. For example the teacher will say S for a praise of worship the answer is Shrine or D for freedom the answer that should be written would be Democracy to get the point. Sometimes in a most comprehensive manner just like in a spelling quiz bee the teacher would record it for future use and as a basis for correction and methodology. For a very young student the use of big quality images can also work just fine for memorization and easy reading.
Multi-media fun- There are various ways to use the computer and multi-media games in tutoring the small children, the computer can generate basic story, reading, writing, simulation, recording and correction in a fun environment. Games like Text Twist are good for spelling, Typer Shark is good game for writing and typing, and Microsoft sound recorder is good for pronunciation. You can access these programs through accessories in entertainment section of all programs depending on your windows setup. There are also various games available in the market and on the internet that you can choose from. If their teacher is good in programming they can even design their own phonetic drills and software according to their needs of study.
Flexibility and Consistency phonetic practices – This can be a straight forward phonetic methodology practices that is usually done in English subject but it can also be associated in various subjects. To be able to teach children and makes their tongue flexible the oral exercises is basically the most important practice, there are words that is hard to pronounce and spell, the student must be familiar with these words and be able to use it in a sentence. For example entrepreneur in phonetic drill may sound like antra pra nur. Another example is Island would sound like I-land with a silent S. Using it in a sentence would be; I want to have a business and be an entrepreneur or I would visit all Islands in Hawaii. The teacher will need to emphasize the use of the given words. And in another subject like science and other subjects, unusual words should be pronounce repeatedly according to its function example; chlorophyll or photosynthesis. They must also demonstrate the meaning of the word through example.
Using various images, charts and sounds – As mentioned earlier this is a very good practice for very small students in kindergarten or primary level. The use of images, pictures, charts and unfamiliar sound using voice tape or audio recording can create a lot of fun. A visual effect usually creates a high impact in the students study habit to be more focus and more creative. They can easily identify the word and be able to pronounce it by imitating the unusual sound that they can hear on the tape. Try using any or all of the activities above and you are guaranteed that the student will surely love it and they will learn.
