How to maintain the motivations of non-heritage students to learn Chinese in a Heritage Language School Research Proposal
Search more Proposals here : Sample Research Proposal Instructions It's an interim research proposal to get approved by the committee. It's equal to an MA thesis level. The title of my research thesis is: How to maintain motivations of non-heritage Chinese learners in a Heritage Saturday School The research should be staying in the fields of Applied Linguistics, Socio-cultural factors; Sociolinguistic, Critical Pedagogy Some big names of them are: David Block; David Widdoson, Bonny Norton, Patricia A. Duff; Terrence G. Wiley; etc. The research project was set up initially for curriculum design; teaching and learning material development for a Heritage Saturday school in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It's a special class designed for non-heritage learners who do not have any Chinese (Mandarin) background to learn Chinese language on Saturdays. Thus, the students in this class were from various backgrounds besides Canadian: Vietnamese, Peruvian, French Canadian, American, Korean, Mexican, Polish, German, etc. Most of them are bilingually nurtured in Canada; some of them speak 3 languages already at age of 7 or 8. There is another reason to name it a special class, that is, the class was consisted by a group of multi-aged students who were from 5 years old to 15 years old. Given of the difficulties caused by the age difference in a language classroom, One year later after, I found some other interesting but important factors had affected more on their learning of Chinese. Thereby I launched an action research on those factors in 2007, under the great support from school principal, administrators, and students' parents. Now I'm enrolled in the interim report in the university, wishing to finish a MA thesis paper so as to enter a PhD program. I was allowed to use the data as 'Secondary Use of Data' for my interim report. It's a longitudinal case study in 2.5 year period. My research was to explore the influencing factors on students' motivations to stay in the Mandarin program, and to find ways to optimize their interests in the targeted language and culture, therefore they would continue staying in the program with more effective learning result. I had about 5 students who was with me in Mandarin Special class for 2 years, some 3 years. None of them had Chinese linguistic or cultural background. They all graduated this Spring. The data was collected during 2 years period, in classroom teaching environment, in school events, and in gym during the break. They were interview questions, such as, why do you come for Chinese class; what have you known about Chinese, and what do you want to learn through this class; what do you like most of the class; what do you like least of the class; how do you like about writing characters; how do you like writing and drawing in brush; how do you like Chinese crafts work in class; how do you comment on the Chinese cooking class; what game do you like most during the break/in class what would you comment on your performances on the stage; what do your parents/neighbors/friends comment on your Chinese learning result what do your friends/peers comment on your learning Chinese in Heritage school etc. These interviews happened at least one semester after they were in the program, usually during the winter session, when students got more familiar with me, so that they would like to talk to me about their thoughts without feeling so nervous. The interview process was always alike friends chatting with each other. Sometimes I jogged down the answers on the paper during the chat. However, I often can not continue taking the notes of their answers when I realize that they started to get nervous on the notes I wrote on the paper. There are some other forms of data, such as video records. I recorded their performances in classroom, or at an in-school events, for instance, Chinese New Year celebration, dumpling making, yearly Closing Ceremony, etc. More detailed students info. are available when needed You can also check these papers.
